Grit
Angela Duckworth, author of the book Grit, defines it as: Passion and perseverance for long-term goals.
It’s not about bursts of effort or emotional hype—it’s about staying committed when things are hard, slow, or unclear.
So What Is Gritty Faith?
It’s a tougher-than-average kind of faith.
Not a faith built on comfort, results, or perfect conditions.
But one that’s anchored in a lifelong, unwavering relationship with Jesus Christ.
I recently watched a viral video of a couple caught cheating—on the Jumbotron—at a Coldplay concert. Turns out, it was the CEO of a company and his HR director. Ouch.
People online were asking:
“What were they thinking?”
“Why would they do that?”
I don’t have the full answer. But here’s one thing I noticed:
They were gritty about it.
There was passion—obviously.
There was effort—they’d worked hard to keep it hidden.
And they seemed like they were in it for the long haul.
But here’s the problem:
Grit works for you—or against you. You get to decide which.
That’s the power of Gritty Faith—it gives your life boundaries, vision, and values so you don’t waste your grit on things that destroy you.
It sets your direction.
It anchors you through your highest moments and deepest valleys.
It helps you pursue peace, joy, and purpose—not chaos and regret.
If I had asked that couple, “Where is this going?”
I imagine they would’ve said something vague like, “We’ll see where it leads.”
Well, now we all know where it led—
Straight to public scandal, broken marriages, and courtroom drama.
A nightmare that’ll follow them for the rest of their lives.
Gritty Faith is tougher than average because the hardest thing you’ll ever have to face…is yourself.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. It’s more than just theology or moral rules.
Jesus didn’t come just to “set us straight”—
He came to show us a better way to live.
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?
Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life...
Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it.”—Matthew 11:28–30 (MSG)
In the NLT, Jesus says:
“Take my yoke upon you... Let me teach you...”
This isn’t about escape. It’s about learning how to carry life differently—with grace.
2. Gritty Faith gives you tools, not just comfort.
When you live the way Jesus teaches, you gain real tools to become more than a conqueror.
“Every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.”—1 John 5:4 (NLT)
3. Gritty Faith gives you clarity.
It helps you say “no” to the things that look good in the moment but will wreck your life—like an affair.
4. It keeps your eyes on what truly matters.
Relationships. Family. Integrity. God. The stuff that actually lasts.
5. It gives you the strength to do what’s right, not just what’s easy.
And when life gets hard, gritty faith brings comfort, hope, and healing.
And that’s just the short list.
You don’t have to be perfect to have gritty faith.
But you do need to be honest, humble, and willing to follow Jesus—especially when it’s hard.
So don’t just have faith.
Have gritty faith—faith that sticks, fights, chooses right, and holds tight to Jesus no matter what.
